You will have great difficulty in getting an entry level oil rig job these days as the oil industry is struggling a bit. You only ave to read the jobs forums to notice that even well qualified guys are struggling to find work. We are talking about guys who have offshore oil employment experience. So what do you do to find offshore jobs? Roustabout will tell you that they sometimes started as painters or cleaners or even stewards on board and oil rig and then when they had been with the company for a year or so they where able to prove that they where the sort of person who can do the job with the right attitude. In the current economic climate I think that this is your best option to secure an offshore oil rig vacancy. Offshore oil platform jobs are such that with the dangers and boredom, the turnover of staff can be quite high. When that happens you are in a position to get an offshore job. If you have previous experience in the hospitality industry you can try your luck getting n oil rig chef position for instance. Or you

could be put in charge of the laundry or even be the baker. This is quite an important position onboard an oil platform as food is one of the few ways to enjoy yourself. A great loaf of bread is a sure way to calm a hungry oil rig worker after a long 12 hour shift in wet, dangerous weather.

You could even look at trying for an onshore job. Onshore oil drilling rig jobs, while not as high paying, teach you a lot of what you need to know in order to operate an offshore oil drilling rig. If you are considering an oil rig career then this could be your ticket to a bright future. It will obviously take you some time to learn what you need to know but then the opportunities of offshore oil rig employment will be open to you.

Offshore oil employment is a worldwide opportunity and overseas oil jobs could find you looking at North Sea jobs or being in South America. You could even find yourself in Canada in the oil sands region. Oil drilling employment really can find you anywhere, usually in an inhospitable environment and that’ why guys with military experience do well because they are used to hardship. Having said that oil feild jobs are hard to get at the moment, you need to be proactive in your job search. You can’t expect the jobs to fall in your lap. You have to go out there with your CV and apply. Not just to a few companies, I’m taking about hundreds. Search on Google, go to the forums and you will find plenty of companies involved in the oil industry who you can contact. Oil industry vacancies do exist and your job is to find them.

Another area of employment on an oil rig is medical. The medic oil rig is an important position that could mean life or death to someone injured and far away from hospital treatment. The oil rig company will pay well to have an experienced paramedic on-board as conditions can deteriorate quickly offshore.

You could also try your hand at being the oil rig radio operator. This is a vital position that can be very boring but is usually combined with that of the safety officer. Any job on an oil platform is dangerous but as far as offshore jobs, roustabouts can be in harms way when working in bad weather. The pay more than makes up for this though and you can find that a few years on the rigs will set you up for life. So take the plunge and put your CV out there and maybe you will soon have a shot at offshore jobs – roustabout.
