Despite what you read, the entry level oil and gas jobs are getting harder to find. You only have to peruse some of the job boards that cater exclusively for the oil and gas industry to see that oil rig vacancies are few and far between.

That is why I advocate being a little bit more creative when trying to secure an oil rig job. What you need to do is build up a list of all the companies that are involved in the oil and gas industry who might be potential employers.

Not every job is advertised and not every company uses the job boards or recruitment companies to obtain new recruits. You will find that most companies will try to source new hires from within the ranks of their own companies. They do this to reduce costs as the recruitment industry charges quite sizeable fees when locating new talent.

So what the companies do when a new position becomes vacant is to advertise themselves. You will find hundreds of positions advertised on Craig’s List and Gumtree and dozens of other job boards. They put up career pages on their own websites and they recruit by word of mouth.

Your job then is to make contact with people within the company you would like to work for and even if they aren’t hiring at the moment they might do so in the future. Make sure that you get permission from them to keep in contact. By all means send your CV or resume but also ask to speak to a manager about career prospects as welll as qualifications that may help you to better your chances.

When you get to speak to a line manager as opposed to an HR manager, ask them what they would do if they where in your shoes. Who would they speak to and what would they do take stand out from the other candidates.

You will be amazed at how helpful these guys and gal’s can be when you ask the advice and help. Yes, you will get the occasional manager who won’t give you the time of day. But that’s also great because you now know who you don’t want to work for. Better to find out before starting then after you are committed and then have to make the decision as to whether you stay or resign.

So pick up the phone or email the companies you want to work for and make contact. Also consider joining the LinkIn network. You will find that there are plenty of people involved in the oil and gas industry who can help you find an oil & gas job.

Plenty of companies advertise their positions here so there’s a wide choices of potential employers for you to choose from
