Well done! You’ve
been searching for a job, and now you have some offers on the table. Which
job offer is right for your career now, and which job will best suit your
lifestyle? Don’t assume the offer with the biggest salary is the one
you should accept.
Let's suppose the job with the biggest paycheck is far from home.
You need to factor in the costs of travel, when deciding if this one is right for you.
If this job is a long way from your house, and your car is a gas guzzler,
it could turn out that your fuel costs each day to get back and forth to
work aren't worth the higher salary.
Unless you can recover the travel costs, is it worth it
in the long run? The extra maintenance costs each year, such as tune-ups and tyres,
are going make a big dent in your budget.
Ther is also the amount of time this travel will take out of every day. An hour
to get to work and then to get back will set you back twenty extra hours of your
time each week. You aren't getting paid for that. And what about spending this time with
your family, or enjoying a relaxing hobby? That higher job offer is looking less enticing
by the minute.
But, if the boss is able to offer flexable hours,
think about the savings this will give you in both your time and money.
Some other benefits you should consider when deciding which job to accept are:
401(k) programs- does the employer match your contributions?
Education- will they cover the cost of continued training?
Health insurance- do they cover all or part of the your cost?
Be sure to make your decision based on all the relevant facts instead
of just how large your salary is!
